What it is

GST is the tax on goods and services in the Maldives. Turn it on only if your business is registered for GST with MIRA. MIRA is the Maldives tax office. You add your TIN (your tax number) and your GST rate. Then you choose if your prices already include GST, or if GST is added at checkout. Checkout is the last page, where customers place the order.

Find it

  1. Tap Settings in the bar at the bottom.
  2. Scroll down to Delivery & payments.
  3. Tap Tax & GST. If GST is off, it says Not registered under it.

A sheet called Tax & GST opens. (A sheet is a panel that covers part of the screen.)

On a computer, Settings is in the bar on the left.

If you do not see Delivery & payments, your shop is a free listing. GST needs a Storefront. See Free listing and Storefront.

Every setting

To turn on GST:

  1. Tap the switch next to Registered for GST. It turns green.
  2. Type your TIN in the TIN box.
  3. Look at the number in the Rate (%) box. Change it if you need to.
  4. Under Do your prices include GST? (in capital letters), tap My prices include GST or Add GST at checkout.
  5. Tap Save at the bottom.

In Settings, under Tax & GST, you now see something like "GST 8% · prices include it · TIN added".

Registered for GST

The app says: "Only turn this on if your business is registered for GST." When the switch is green, GST is on. When it is grey, GST is off.

To stop GST, tap the switch so it turns grey. Then tap Save. Settings says Not registered again.

When GST is on, Insights has a GST return report with the GST on your sales. See Get your GST sales numbers. With the Bills and GST add-on, you get a full GST return with its own settings. See Bills and GST: your GST return.

TIN

This is your GST TIN, from your GST certificate. MIRA's GST TIN has 13 characters (letters and numbers), like 1234567GST501. You must type a TIN to turn GST on.

If your TIN does not look like that, an orange line says: "MIRA's GST TIN has 13 characters, like 1234567GST501. Check yours on the GST certificate." You can still save, but check it.

With the Bills and GST add-on, a yellow note shows instead. It says "Tax invoices are paused." It stays until you type a full GST TIN. See Common mistakes below.

Customers see

"GST registered · TIN 1234567GST501" at the bottom of your shop page. Their receipt also shows your TIN next to your shop name.

The bottom of your shop page can also show your delivery and refund policy. See Add a delivery and refund policy.

Do you have the Bills and GST add-on and a full TIN? Then business customers can ask for a tax invoice at checkout. See Bills and GST: tax invoices.

Rate (%)

This is your GST rate, as a percent. Type a number from 0 to 100, like 8.

In Settings, the row shows the rate, like "GST 8%".

Do your prices include GST?

You have two choices. The one you pick shows an example with a price of 100. Here, the examples use a rate of 8%.

  • My prices include GST: "What you type on the menu is what the customer pays." The example says "Customer pays 100.00", "GST 8% inside it 7.41" and "You keep 92.59".
  • Add GST at checkout: "Item prices are before tax. GST is a line of its own on the bill." The example says "Item price 100.00", "GST 8% added +8.00" and "Customer pays 108.00".
Customers see

with My prices include GST, the prices you typed. In the basket, the total says "Includes GST 8%, MVR 7.41". At checkout, they see it when they tap the total.

Customers see

with Add GST at checkout, the prices you typed on your shop page. Then a line "GST 8%" with the amount. It is in the basket, at checkout when they tap the total, and on the receipt.

If you change from My prices include GST to Add GST at checkout, a yellow note says: "This changes what customers pay. An MVR 100 item becomes MVR 108.00 at checkout from the moment you save. Orders already placed keep their old totals."

At the Counter (the POS tab), GST shows as its own line when your prices do not include GST. See Take cash, card, transfer or credit at the Counter. For every line in a customer's total, see How customers order from you.

No GST

Some items have no GST. They are called zero-rated items. Turn on No GST in each of these items.

  1. Tap Items in the bar at the bottom.
  2. Tap the item's name or photo. Do not tap the Shown button on the right. (It may say Sold out or Hidden.) The item sheet opens.
  3. Tap No GST in the round buttons under the tiles.

If you do not see No GST, tap All at the end of the round buttons. A panel called All features opens. Tap No GST there. It says "For zero-rated items".

A message says "No GST on it". The button turns green. It is saved right away. To undo, tap No GST again. The message then says "GST is added again".

No GST only shows when Registered for GST is on. After you tap it, the green GST line in the item's Price panel goes away. This line looks like "Customers pay MVR 108 with GST 8%" or "Includes GST 8% · MVR 92.59 before GST".

Customers see

no GST added for this item. With My prices include GST, the price stays the same.

Who can use it

Only the owner can set Tax & GST. Senior managers, managers and staff do not see Settings.

The owner, senior managers and managers can turn on No GST on an item. Staff cannot open Items.

GST needs a Storefront. Tax invoices need the Bills and GST add-on. You can see the price in the add-on store.

Common mistakes

A red message says "Enter your TIN to issue tax invoices."

Registered for GST is on, but the TIN box is empty. Type your TIN from your GST certificate. Then tap Save.

A yellow note says "Tax invoices are paused."

You have the Bills and GST add-on, and your TIN does not look like a full GST TIN. Type your full GST TIN, like 1234567GST501. Then tap Save. Until then, paid sales get receipts, not tax invoices.

My prices went up at checkout

You picked Add GST at checkout. If the prices you typed already include GST, tap My prices include GST. Then tap Save. Orders already placed keep their old totals.

A red message says "GST rate must be between 0 and 100."

Type a number from 0 to 100 in Rate (%), like 8. Then tap Save.

I cannot find No GST on my item

No GST only shows when Registered for GST is on in Settings. Only the owner can turn it on. If you are not the owner, ask them. Then open the item and tap All to see every button.

Tip

Type your TIN exactly as it is on your GST certificate. It shows on your shop page and on receipts.
