What it is
Ask lets an item ask customers something when they order it. For example, the name to print on a T-shirt, or a flavour from a short list. Customers answer before they can add the item. You see each answer on the order. For top-ups and other things you send digitally, use Digital instead. See Sell digital items: codes, links and top-ups.
Find it
- Tap Items in the bar at the bottom.
- Tap the item's name or photo, not the button on the right of its row.
- Tap Ask in the round buttons under the tiles. A panel called Ask the customer opens.
If you do not see Ask, tap All. Then tap Ask in the list.
The panel says: "Customers answer before it goes in their basket. You see each answer on the order."
On a computer, Items is in the bar on the left. The item opens on the right.
Is the button pale, with "Not with digital" or "Not with hamper" under it? Ask cannot be on together with Digital or a box. Tap that button (Digital, or your box button, like Hamper). At the bottom of its panel, tap the button that turns it off. Then tap Ask again.
Every setting
To add a question:
- Under What customers tell you, tap Add a question. A panel called Question opens.
- Type your question in the Question box, like "Name on the cake". The grey words in the box are only an example.
- Under Kind of answer, tap the kind you want. Short text is picked when you start.
- Tap Done at the top right. You are back in Ask the customer.
- Tap Done again. The item saves.
Your question shows in the list with a line like "Short text · asked twice · must be answered".
You can add up to 4 questions. The app says "Up to 4, like a name to engrave. One answer for each basket line." A customer who wants 2 cakes with different names adds the cake twice. They type a name each time.
Question
The words customers see above the answer box. Keep it short, like "Name on the cake".
Kind of answer
- Short text (picked when you start): customers type any words.
- Pick from a list: customers tap one of your choices. See Choices below.
- Phone number: customers type a phone number. If it looks wrong, they see "Check the number. Mobile numbers have 7 digits."
- ID or code: customers type a code, like a member number. If it has signs that cannot be used, they see "Some characters here are not allowed."
- Email: customers type an email address. If it looks wrong, they see "Check the email address."
Choices
This shows only for Pick from a list.
- Type a choice in the box that says "Add a choice".
- Tap Add.
- Add each choice the same way.
To take a choice off, tap it. Until you add one, the app says "Add at least one choice."
Ask twice to check
On when you start. Under it, the app says "They type it again and both must match". This switch is not there for Pick from a list. If you tap Pick from a list and then change back, the switch is off.
Customers seea second box that says "Type it again". If the two answers are different, they see "The two do not match".
Must answer
On when you start. Under it, the app says "They can't add it without an answer". Turn it off if customers may skip the question.
Customers seea Required label next to your question, or Optional when the switch is off. Until they answer, the button says "Fill in Name on the cake".
Help under the question
A short note under the answer box. You can leave it empty. For example: "Up to two words."
Change or remove a question
- Tap the question in the list.
- Make your change.
- Tap Done. You are back in Ask the customer.
- Tap Done again. The item saves.
To remove a question:
- Tap the question in the list.

- Tap Remove. To keep the question, tap Keep it instead.
- Tap Done to save.
Copy questions from another item
- In Ask the customer, tap Copy questions from another item. A panel called Copy questions opens.
- Tap the item whose questions you want. Each item shows how many it has, like "2 questions".
If this item already has questions, the app asks first. For example: "Replace your 1 question with the 2 from Birthday cake?" Tap Replace, or Keep it.
If no other item has questions, the app says "No other item has questions yet."
What customers see
Customers seeyour question with an answer box when they open the item. Under your questions, a note says "The shop makes it exactly as you type it. Check the spelling."
An item that asks a question cannot go in a box that customers fill. Customers see "Items that ask you a question can't go in a box. Add it on its own." See Make a box customers fill themselves.
Where you see the answer
On the order page, each answer shows under the item, with your question above it. Tap Copy next to it to copy it. The answer also shows with the item on the order board and on the prep sheet. See Everything on an order page and Use the prep sheet.
To take these items at the Counter (the POS tab), see Sell items with sizes, extras or questions at the Counter.
Stop asking
In Ask the customer, tap Stop asking at the bottom. The app does not ask you first. The item saves, and the app says "Ask off". Your questions go too. To get them back, tap Undo next to "Ask off" before it goes away.
Who can use it
The owner, senior managers and managers can set up questions. Staff do not see the Items tab.
Ask needs a Storefront.
Common mistakes
A red message says "Add a question, or tap Stop asking."
You turned on Ask, but there is no question yet. Tap Add a question. If you do not want to ask anything, tap Stop asking.
A red message says "Give every question a label."
A question has no words. Tap the question that says "Untitled question" and type it. Or tap Remove this question.
A red message says "Add at least one choice for "Flavour"."
That question is Pick from a list, but it has no choices. Tap it and add a choice.
Customers have to type their answer twice
Ask twice to check is on. It helps with spelling. If one answer is enough, tap the question and turn the switch off.
Tip
Use Pick from a list when there are only a few answers, like cake flavours. Customers tap instead of typing, so there are no spelling mistakes.
