What it is
A category is a group of items, like Cakes or Drinks. Your shop page shows your categories in the order you choose. Customers tap a category to see its items. Food shops call them sections.
Find it
- Tap Items in the bar at the bottom.
- Tap the round … button at the top, on the right.
- Tap Manage categories.
A sheet called Manage categories slides up. (A sheet is a panel that covers part of the screen.)
On a computer, Items is in the bar on the left. Click Manage categories in the row of buttons above your list.
The … button shows once you have an item or a category. If you do not see Items, see Free listing and Storefront.
Every setting
To make a category:
- Type a name in the Category name box at the top. For example, Cakes.
- Tap Add category at the bottom.
The new category shows at the bottom of the list. Now put items in it. See "Put an item in a category" below.
On a computer, the sheet opens in the middle of the screen.
Category name
The box says "e.g. Fresh produce" in grey. That is only an example. Type a short name that customers understand.
Food shops see the word Section when they open an item. This sheet still says category. They are the same thing.
Change the order
Each category has an up arrow and a down arrow on the right.
- Tap the up arrow to move the category up one place.
- Tap the down arrow to move it down one place.
The top category's up arrow is pale. So is the bottom category's down arrow. Your Items page shows your categories in this order too.
Customers seeyour categories in this order on your shop page.
To change the order of the items inside a category, see Choose the order items show in.
Rename a category
- Tap the pencil next to the category.
- The box at the top now says Rename category, with the old name in it. Change the name.
- Tap Rename category at the bottom.
To stop without renaming, close the sheet with the X at the top right.
Delete a category
- Tap the red bin next to the category. A yellow box shows at the top of the sheet. It says: "Items in this category will become uncategorised."
- Tap Confirm delete in the yellow box.
To keep the category, tap Keep category instead.
Your items are not deleted. They move to a card called Uncategorised on your Items page. Uncategorised means "with no category".
Put an item in a category
- On the Items page, tap the item's name or photo.
- Tap the item's name at the top of the sheet. Under the name, you see its category, like "Cakes".
- A panel called Photos and details opens. Scroll down to Category.
- Tap the category you want. Tap None for no category.
- Tap Done at the top right.
To make a new category here, tap + New. Type the name in the New category box. Then tap Add. If that name is already a category, the app picks it. It does not make a second one. Food shops see Section and New section.
For the rest of this panel, see Change an item's name, photos, price or details.
+ Add
Each category has its own card on the Items page. Tap + Add at the top right of a category's card. A new item opens, already in that category. A category with no items says "No items yet." Tap Add item under it. See Add your first item.
Move many items at once
To move many items to another category, tap Select on the Items page. Tap the items. Then tap Move and pick a category. See Change many items at once.
What customers see
It depends on your shop's look. See Choose your shop's look.
- Market: a row of buttons at the top: All, then one for each category. Tapping a category shows only its items. Under All, each category is a heading.
- Feast: a row of buttons that jump down to each category. Each category is a heading with how many items it has. On a computer, the buttons are a list on the left instead, under "Menu".
- Shelf: a shop with a few items shows one list, with no category names. Category buttons show at the top when you have more items.
On Market and Feast, items with no category show last, under the heading "More". On Feast, if none of your categories has items, the heading says "Menu".
With the Section builder add-on, you can change how the category buttons look: Pills, Underlined or Boxes. See Section builder: change how each part looks.
Who can use it
The owner, senior managers and managers can make and change categories. Staff do not see the Items tab.
Categories come with a Storefront.
Common mistakes
It says "Please enter a name."
The Category name box is empty. Type a name first. Then tap Add category, or Rename category if you are renaming.
A red box shows at the top of the sheet
Your change did not save. The red box says why. Check your internet. Then try again. Not the owner? If it still shows, ask the owner to make the change.
My new item went into the wrong category
A new item goes into your first category. If you tap + Add on a category's card, it goes into that one instead. To change it, open the item and pick another category in Photos and details.
Some items are under Uncategorised
These items have no category, or their category was deleted. On Market and Feast, customers see them last, under "More". To put them in a category, tap Select. Tap the items. Then tap Move and pick a category.
My categories do not show on my shop
Your shop may use the Shelf look. With only a few items, Shelf shows one list with no category names. To show categories, pick the Market or Feast look. See Choose your shop's look.
Tip
Put the category that sells most at the top. Customers see it first when they open your shop.
